Salute to seniors: Austin Poisson of Socastee

What was your most memorable race?
The state cross country meet. By far the best race I've ever run and pushed harder than I ever had. Me and my teammates WIll Caswell and Justin Knipper ran side by side approaching the final sprint as we did everyday in practice that season.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?
My own teammate Will Caswell. It was friendly competition however, it was competition that pushed us both to do better. We fought back and forth all of my senior year for the number one spot but we always remembered that our team was the number one priority,

What was your greatest accomplishment?
Breaking two of our school records this year. Before I embarked on my running seasons this year, that was my goal. It was an incredible feeling to leave that mark on on my high school.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running/track and field career in high school?
I definitely would've started cross country much sooner. I grew to love it so much in the short two years that I ran.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?
My most difficult obstacle would have to be the season I had my junior year in cross country. I collapsed in a race weeks before state competition and it really threw me off. However, I was still able to come back and PR for states even though It wasn't quite the time I would've liked.

What will you miss the most?
I will miss my team the most along with their immaturity. Such a great group of younger talent moving up and they are an inspiration to the sport. They like to goof around alot but they know that when its race day, it's serious.

What advice you would give to younger athletes?
Work your hardest every chance you get. Not only will you benefit on the track or the course but in life as well.

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?
My coach, Robb Urbaniak, was always there to encourage, support, and push me when I needed it. I may have not appreciated at the time but I wouldn't be where I am today without it. He's put so much time into our training and the effort of making us better and more than revived a dying track program at Socastee. I very much look forward to what is to come in the next few years from his coaching. Congrats on the new baby too, coach!

What are your college plans?
I will be attending and running for the College of Charleston next fall and couldn't be more excited. I'll definitely be running behind some all stars of the state but look forward to what I can gain by being around such great talent and people pushing me to do better.

Who would you like to say thank you to?
I would like to thank my coaches, team, and most importantly my family for their continued support in my running and goals. Without their support I may have never decided to lace up my shoes and go out for our school's track team.
