Four schools from the state will be making the trip to Philadelphia this week for the 120th annual Penn Relays Carnival, held Thursday to Saturday at Franklin Field.
Along with a pair of relay teams (4x100 meters, 4x400), Bishop Hendricken will have two of its athletes competing in the individual events. Senior Colin Tierney is entered in the 3,000m, to be held on Friday at 5:55 p.m. Tierney is seeded No. 11 in the field of 29 runners with his best of 8:35.36, a time he ran to finish second at the Yale Track Classic this past winter. Fairfield Prep senior Christian Alvarado, the New England indoor two-mile champion, is the No. 1 seed at 8:20.36. By the looks of it, if Tierney can run a sub 8:30, certainly within his capabilities, he could crack the top six. Moses is seeded at No. 22 in the long jump, based on his best of 23 feet, 0.5 inches at the Class A indoor meet.
La Salle Academy will be sending both its boys’ and girls’ teams to the City of Brotherly Love. The Lady Rams are entered in the elite Championship of America (COA) distance medley relay. The race features four of the top five teams from the indoor season, including defending Penn champion Benjamin Cardozo, N.Y., and New Balance National Indoor (NBNI) titlist West Springfield, Va. La Salle is a seventh seed with its time 12:04.27 from the NBNI.
The La Salle boys’ DMR is the 14th seed of 15 schools in the COA event. The top five teams from NBNI will be in Philly. Cardinal O’Hara, Pa., the team champion, is the top seed with its time of 10:00.75. That’s nearly four-seconds faster than the No. 2, West Chester Henderson, Pa. The Rams have a best of 10:24.10, which they did to win the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix back in February.
With star sprinter Quashira McIntosh as its anchor, Hope will be entered in the 4x100 Small Schools race on Thursday morning at 11:10. The Blue Wave will also have a 4x400 squad and a boys’ 4x400 team at the meet.
Barrington will have just one relay team at Penn, but it’s a good one. The Eagles will be on the track on Thursday at 10:30 a.m., in the Small School 4x800. Senior Abby Livingston leads a favored squad that ran 9:09.59 to win the New England’Indoor Championship.
