Ice bucket challenge coming to Bob Jenkins SCTCCCA Coaches Classic

The South Carolina Track and Cross Country Coaches Classic is holding what the assocation calls the "WORLD's largest ice bucket challenge" Saturday follow competitions at the Bob Jenkins SCTCCCA Coaches Classic.

The association is aiming to challenge other states with the event.

More coverage coming each day this week leading up to Saturday's meet.

The association is making a $500 donation to the ALS Association and from other donations is looking to raise $1,500 to $2,000.

Letter from Spring Valley coach John Jones:

Cross Country Coaches,

You have a chance to promote your sport, help the cause of ALS, and make history all at the same time. Our Association will be holding the WORLD's largest ice bucket challenge at the Coaches Classic Meet this Saturday

Here is what you need to do:
1) Find out how many of your runners want to participate and put them in pairs. (one dunks and one gets dunked)
2) Go to Home Depot or Lowes or Ace and get a 9 quart bucket for each pair. (Home Depot has an HDX 9qt bucket for $1.88)
3) Let the kids take the bucket home and decorate it (school name, their name, whatever).
4) Bring the buckets to the meet awards area. (The earlier the better.)
5) Email me johjones@richland2.org with the number of pairs your team will have. Email by school if you can instead of one for boys and one for girls.

It's that easy. Right after the last award, all the kids will go to their buckets. We will already have filled them with water and ice. Our president, David Lee, will say a few words and shoot the gun. The kids dunk, they keep their bucket and we go viral!

How do we help ALS? First, our Association will donate $500. Then we would like each pair of kids to donate $1 (50 cents a kid). Coaches, you could pay this or your booster club could or better yet get the kids to donate and have some skin in the game. Each school should bring an envelope to the meet with the money collected and the school name on it. We will also be asking for donations as the cars drive in to the meet. Total, we should be able to raise $1500 to $2000 easy.

Dave will challenge all the other states' cc associations to do the same.

All of Spring Valley's runners have already agreed to join the fun so we have 35 pairs. Spring Valley challenges every other school get on board.

Please email me, John Jones, johjones@richland2.org by Wednesday with the number of buckets (pairs) you will have. Let your local tv stations and all media outlets in your area know that we will be doing the biggest challenge in the World. SCRunners will video the event and send our challenge to all the other state milesplit outlets.

Join the fun and let's make a difference.
