Did you know?: Lake Murray Invitational

The Lake Murray Invitational is Saturday at Crooked Creek Park. scrunners.com talked with Chapin coach Jack LeGrand about the meet and its history. 

  • The Lake Murray Invitational started after coaches from the area had bad experiences at other meets. Approximately 20 years is when the meet started at Crooked Creek Park, according to meet management. 
  • The meet is a joint venture between Irmo and Chapin.
  • Course setup starts on Friday for meet management. 
  • The meet always used computers to score. 
  • Meet management arrives Saturday morning at 6:30 to prepare the venue and course. 
  • This will be the first year the meet has used chip-timing. 
  • The course is certified because it is used for open races. 
  • Thirty to 40 volunteers are used during the meet. 
  • One year it rained before the meet that runners ran through a creek with knee-deep water and kids were sliding into the finish, according to meet management.
