Did you know?: SCHSL State Championships

  • The first year for a female state meet was 1976. Wando girls won the Class AAAA title with 35 points.  Irmo finished second with 50 points. 
  • The only state meet not held on a Saturday was 1988. It was held on Election Day. 
  • The first year of the boys state meet was 1969 (listed as an unofficial meet). There was only a Class AAAA race and Edmunds (where was this school, what is it now? - email scrunners if you know) won with 35 points. Brookland-Cayce finished second with 66 points. 
  • The 1969-1973 meet was held the 22nd week of the SCHSL calendar. This would be the first or second week in December. 
  • Class AAA and AA boys races started in 1980. Class A boys ran separate starting in 2006. 
  • Swansea (Class AA) alumnus Diana Willard won state titles from 1999-2004. Willard ran for both Pelion and Swansea. Her last two titles were won at Swansea. Two females have three-straight titles (Kala Boulware (Spring Valley) and Lindsey Rogers (Hanna)).
  • Spring Valley alumnus Kate Niehaus holds the state meet best (17:36, Sandhills, 2003). Niehaus won four titles. 
  • No boys have won more than four individual titles. Christ Church alumnus James Quattlebaum won four titles. 
  • Hilton Head alumnus David Adams holds the state meet best (14:36, Fort Jackson, 1999). Adams will be in attendance Saturday morning. 
  • In 1976 and 1977 females ran two miles for the state meet. The winning times were 14:12 in 1976 (Betty Cox, North Myrtle Beach) and 13:01 in 1977 (Shelli Woolridge, Mt. Pisgah). 
  • The 1969 boys state meet was on a 2.25 mile course won by Steve Bolin of York in 11 minutes, 30 seconds. 
  • Bolin won again in 1970, this time on a 2.5 mile course in 11 minutes, 33 seconds. 
  • Jim Kilbreth coached the first Shrine Bowl Run team in 1986. This is the 29th year of the Shrine Bowl Run. The run used to be a competition between North Carolina and South Carolina.  
  • The state meet has been held at four different sites (Alice Drive Jr. High in Sumter, Sesquicentennial State Park in Columbia, Hilton Field at Fort Jackson and Sandhills Research Center).
