Easley Firecracker Frolic 5k course change announced

Update: Race organizers announced following the awards ceremony the 2008 course will go back to the previous course.

The Easley Sporting Goods July 4 Firecracker Frolic annual 5k road race course has changed due to July 4 festivities in the city.

"The race course has changed due to city preparing for the July 4th events," said Easley City Administrator Jonathan "Fox" Simons, Jr.  "In the past the event was held in Market Square, but last year the decision was made to hold (the events) along Main Street.  This decision necessitated the closure of Main Street beginning on the evening of the third.

The 3.1 mile race started in 1993 with 105 participants.

City of Easley events director Brantli J. Owens said in an e-mail there will be a stage across Main Street and it is a liability the morning of the race.

"Easley Sporting Goods has changed the race course to accommodate this change in location," Simons added. "Runners can park in Old Market Square or on the surrounding streets that are not closed."

Registration: 6 a.m.
Race start: 7:30 a.m.
