Lovelace runs 15:39 prior to season

Chapin rising senior Luke Lovelace, a 2006 Footlocker Nationals qualifier, finished second overall Saturday at the Hot Summer's Night 5,000-meter run in Columbia.

Lovelace covered the 3.1 mile course in 15:39, winning his age group (17-19). Eric Ashton (39) finished 17 seconds ahead of Lovelace to take the win.

The Chapin Eagle placed 36th at nationals in 16:27.

During the 2006 state cross country meet, Lovelace had the second fastest time of the day (15:41). Broome rising senior Stefan Shealy, running in Class AA competition ran 15:38, the fastest time of the day.

According to the Chapin cross country Web site, the Eagles first meet is Aug. 29 against Airport and Lexington at home. Chapin also listed Eye Opener on their 2007 schedule, which is slated for Sept. 8.

Wren alumna Sunday Ford, a rising junior at Clemson, was the second female across the line in 19:28, 55 seconds behind champion Kathryn Cavanaugh (25).  Ford won her age group (20 - 24).

147 females and 219 males competed Saturday, according to results.
