Salute to seniors: Spartanburg's Myers McKinney

What was your most memorable race/competition?
For me, it was 2012 Class AAAA state championships in cross country. The 25 second personal record and top 10 finish capped off what was an important breakout season for me. The race itself was so memorable because with a mile to go after the big hill in Sandhills, I was in 20th place and saw a pack some 25 meters front of me. I caught up with that pack and improved to 10th place. The race was my first all-state finish.

Where did you face your biggest competition? 2013 Footlocker South.
I was in the same race as Sean McGorty, who ran a course record breaking time of 14:28, and nine other sub-15 runners.

Out of all of your high school accomplishments, which stands out the most?
Knowing that with my high placing in the 3200 this year, I along with my teammates Shonquez Caldwell (400) and Tavien Feaster (100 and 200), helped the Vikings finish top five in the state.

If you could do it all over again, what would you change about your athletic career in high school?
I would pay much more attention to my body and realize that under-training is preferable to over-training.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?
In 2014 track, I sustained three consecutive injuries that forced me to shut it down that season and wait till early June to run. I never really got to compete in 2014 track and it was very tough to sit out for so long from the sport I love.

What will you miss the most?
The people and relationships I've made. Striving for excellence and getting to know people who also strive for excellence in running has been rewarding for me and I'll have trouble leaving my team and my community full of runners who I know and love.

Do you have any advice for younger athletes?
Run for something bigger than yourself. For me, that has been using the platform I get from running to help me become more Christ-like and reflective of Him.

How have your coaches influenced your performances and your life goals?
They have helped develop my passion for the sport and simultaneously develop my passion for my school work and life.

What are your college plans?
I will wear Demon-Deacon black and gold as I plan to attend and compete for Wake Forest University.

Shout-outs?
To Coach (Rob) Wilder for sparking my love for the sport.
