Walhalla girls track team self report error, not eligible for region title

Walhalla girls track and field team self reported a "technical error" in the Region 1-2A girls track and field meet.

Hal Dunlap, the Razorbacks' athletic director, issued a statement that mentioned, "An unqualified girl participated in the shot and discus events. The error was self reported and will result in Walhalla not being eligible for the Region title."

According the the South Carolina High School Web site under region meet regulations of the handbook (PDF) (page 38), "A student must have participated in at least two regular season track meets prior to entering region qualifying leading to the State Meet. The High School League Executive Committee must make any exceptions."

Walhalla defeated Pendleton for the title with 158 points to the Bulldogs' 144.50.

The statement also mentioned that other Walhalla qualifiers on the girls team "will continue to advance to the Upstate track meet."

Walhalla athletic director Hal Dunlap complete statement: "Walhalla had a technical error in the Region 1 Girls Track meet. An unqualified girl participated in the shot and discus events. The girl was a two-sport spring athlete who failed to participate in the required number of meets to qualify for the Region meet. The error was self reported and will result in Walhalla not being eligble for the Region title. All other Walhalla girl qualifiers at the Region meet will continue to advance to the Upstate track meet."

Statement from South Carolina High School League: "Walhalla was disqualified from the meet due to the participation of an ineligible athlete. Per the SCHSL, scores will not change and upper-state qualifications for the eligible athletes from Walhalla will not change, but the Shot Put & Discus Throw were re-scored without the ineligible athlete included. Please note the change in the qualifiers in the Shot Put."
