Later in the 400 meter hurdles, Cockrell would face her biggest test in one of the nation's premier hurdlers in Brandee Johnson of Nansemond River, who was coming off a stellar hurdles double herself at the Texas Relays for the 100 and 300 meter hurdles.

Cockrell was challenged thru the first 200 meters of the race by Johnson, but was then able to create separation coming off the final turn to shatter the meet record in a US #1 clocking of 57.88. Johnson would finish roughly two and half seconds back in 1:00.43 for runner-up honors. The previous meet record was set back in 2008 by Ryan Krais of Methacton (PA) in 58.96.
