Interview: Mann thrower Brittney Waller

scrunners.com: What does it mean to be you have a number four discus throw in the nation?
waller: At first when my mom told me that I have the number four throw I was shocked. I realize it will not last for too long. But while it lasts, I will enjoy the accomplishment.

scrunners.com: What did you think of your performances at Seneca and team?
waller: My performance was good this weekend. I threw my personal record in shot (44-04.25) and finally got back around last year's marks for discus which was exciting. The team did great this weekend. Every time the girls hit the track and perform, there is always someone stepping up to the plate and performing. It's great to know that everyone still remains hungry each and every week.

scrunners.com: How would you rate your performances, shot and discus?
waller: For discus, my throws were very inconsistent. Instead of me going all out and throwing lights out, I was lazy with my footwork. I made large steps and rushed through my throw rather than letting it come naturally. I think I did okay. For shot put, I scratched my first throw, tried to get a mark on the second throw, and threw my third with too much height. Naomi Atkins (my teammate) pushed me to throw far. She came out and threw a 40 going into finals and I was so excited for her. When I threw the 44 and got out the pit, she was the first person to congratulate me. My success is her success and vice versa.

scrunners.com: What's next for you in terms of goals for this season?
waller: My only goals are to perform consistently and continue to learn in shot put and discus. I don't think about the records or the numbers.

scrunners.com: Who was in attendance from your family watching Saturday?
waller: I consider my teammates and the coaching staff a part of my family. So, my mom was there, Coach Adams (throws coach), Naomi, and the rest of the team in the stands.

scrunners.com: How does support help you when competing?
waller: I love the support. It helps me realize that when I'm down I am one step away from a laugh. There is never a dull moment with Coach Moss, Coach Adams and Coach Barnes. They expect nothing but your best.

scrunners.com: When talking with teammates during your events, do you discuss anything specific?
waller: While we are throwing, our serious game time mentality comes out. If one of us doesn't throw well, the other puts another set of eyes on it and points out the good and the bad. But when we have an opportunity to have a break in between the events, we laugh with Coach Adams and his old school ways. The laughs help us relax and move on to the next event.

scrunners.com: Going into Coaches Classic, what kind of training will you do and with a chance to getting a better view of the state in one place and what do you see yourself achieving?
waller: With Coaches Classic this weekend, we will weight lift, do short sprints, work on the basic footwork for shot put and discus and have a walk through of each event on Friday. I just hope to go out there and do my best. Sometimes your best isn't good enough and that is what makes me work harder for the next time I'm able to compete.
