Southern Conference Track and Field Championship Recap

The Citadel, College of Charleston, Furman University and Wofford College competed at the two-day Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships from May 1-2.

The Citadel was the first team in on the men\'s side for South Carolina, tallying 63 points. Furman tied for fifth, Wofford finished seventh and the College of Charleston men did not score in the meet. Leading South Carolina colleges in female scoring was College of Charleston. The Lady Cougars finished sixth with 30 points. Furman tallied 26.5 points, finishing eighth and Wofford placed in the top ten with 11 points. The Citadel women placed 12th in the meet with five points. Nine men\'s teams scored and 12 women\'s teams scored at the meet, held at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.

College of Charleston

Kyle Palmquist ed the Cougars in the meet with a second place finish in the 5,000-meter event. The Cougars set two new school records in the 4x100m relay team which placed sixth overall in 48.86 seconds. Charleston\'s 4x400m relay team also set a new school mark of 4:06.85.

Wofford

Ugo Ihekweazu led the Wofford outdoor track & field teams at the Southern Conference Championship this past weekend.

In Sunday\'s action on the men\'s side, the Terriers garnered a first-place result from Ihekweazu in the high jump. The freshman, who also played basketball this past season, leaped to a mark of 6\'4-3/4\" (1.95m) to win the event.

Teammate on the basketball court and in the field events, Adrien Borders, garnered his second runner-up mark of the weekend as he placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 48\'2\" (14.68m).

Crystal Belcher led the Lady Terriers on Sunday as she competed in the shot put and discus events. In the shot put, Belcher finished third in her flight but 10th overall with a mark of 38\'3/4\" (11.60m). Belcher also notched a 15th-place heave of 106\'1\" (32.33m) in the discus.

Furman

Paladin teammates Tyler Johnson and Jamie Bach finished third and fourth, respectively in the 800-meter event. Johnson, who took first place in his heat on Saturday completed the event in 1:53.40.

Brian Stone followed up a preliminary victory on Saturday with a third place finish in the 110m hurdles. Stone\'s 14.84 placed him behind Western Carolina\'s Lawrence Briscoe and Xavier Godard.

Molly Mungovan paced the Lady Paladins. Mungovan placed third in the 1,500m run and eighth in the 5,000m with a time of 18:56.30.

Citadel

Sophomore Martha Skinner led The Citadel women at the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships with a fourth-place finish in the javelin. The Citadel\'s five points came from Skinner in the javelin with a toss of 119-7. She broke the school record in the javelin earlier this year with a 126-6 toss.

The 4x100 relay team of senior Rose Rodriguez, sophomore Monesha Booker, junior Kelly Pesterfield and sophomore Miriam Crawford, finished ninth overall, while posting a school record time of 49.31. The 4x400 relay team also finished ninth with a time of 4:12.76. This currently ranks Rodriguez, Booker, Crawford and freshman Opal Vaughn as the second-fastest time in the women\'s eight year history. Rodriguez ran a personal best time of 26.78 in the 200-meters and also moved into the fifth position on the all-time list.

Senior Alex Prince led the Bulldogs as he qualified for the NCAA Regional with a second place finish in the 400-meter with a school-record time of 47.09.

The Citadel men collected 12 points in the discus throw. Four different individuals scored those 12 points-freshman Zach DiBois (4th), Senior Chris Franklin (5th), freshman Alex Croskey (7th) and senior Erick Austin (8th) threw in a steady rain.

Whitakers Wins SoCon HJ Title As Freshman Catamount

Freshman Brittany Whitaker (Blue Ridge (S.C.) HS) won the women\'s high jump with a regional qualifying jump of five feet, eight and one half inches at the meet.

The 2004 NCAA D-I East Regional Championship takes place from May 28-29 at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla.
