SC USATF State Association Meet Saturday

The 2004 South Carolina Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships is set for this weekend, June 11-13 at Irmo High School's track and field facility, located near Columbia. South Carolina's USATF association is hosting the regional championships from July 8-11 at Weems Baskin Stadium on the campus of University of South Carolina in Columbia.

The meets are made up of six divisions for boys and six divisions for girls. Below are the division, based on year of birth in which the athlete shall compete.

Sub Bantam - 1996 and after
Bantam - 1994-1995
Midget - 1992-1993
Youth - 1990-1991
Intermediate - 1988-1989
Young Women/Men - 1986-1987

Note: Athletes who are still 18 years of age through the final day, Aug. 1, of the National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships in Eugene, OR, shall be eligible to compete in the Young Men's and Young Women's division through the meet.

Competitors must compete in their own divisions only. No athlete may compete in a younger or older division in individual, relay or team events.

Sub Bantam athletes may compete as a Bantam (age division 1994-1995). This must be entered on the entry form and the athlete must remain in this division for all events entered and will be declared in this age division for all succeeding competitions.

Medals for the top three athletes in each event will be awarded. An athlete may pick up his/her medal as soon as the event results are posted. The athlete must present his/her bib number to receive a medal.

The top five from the association meet this weekend can go onto regionals. At regionals the top five from the other associations that make up the region (GA, NC, VA, Potomac Valley (MD, D.C.) will be at the meet. The top three at regionals can move onto nationals. Any athletes who are on the U.S. Junior Team have an automatic by to regionals and/or nationals.

Directions to Irmo High School (state meet this weekend): From I-26 take exit 103 (Harbison Blvd.). If you coming eastbound go right on Harbison Blvd. If you are coming westbound you will turn left on Harbison Blvd. Go past the mall and other retail facilities. Once you reach St. Andrews Road go right and Irmo High School is on your immediate left.

Directions to University of South Carolina (regional meet in July): From I-26 take 126 (downtown Columbia). This runs into downtown Columbia and becomes Elmwood. Go right on Assemble. Go left on Rosewood, go 1/4 mile. Turn left on Marion Street. From I-77 take exit 10 (Fort Jackson Blvd.). If traveling 77-S go right and if traveling 77-N go left. Continue to split in road and bear left onto Wildcat Blvd. This turns into Rosewood. Go three-four miles and turn right on Marion St. If coming from 95-S take I-20 to 77-S and follow the above directions.
