WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Presbyterian College women's cross country team competed in the 2009 Big South Women's Cross Country Championship presented by UCS, Musco, and Penguin Sport-Wash at the Shady Oaks course in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Saturday morning.? Due to the transition to Division I, the Blue Hose were not scored as a team.

Senior captain Mellette Johnson led the way for the Blue Hose, crossing the line in a strong 21:47 on a muddy course.? Next to cross the line was sophomore Stephanie Newell in 22:54.? Rounding out the team's finishers were senior Regan Hayes (23:40), sophomore Sabrina Baker (23:51), freshman Emily Witt (24:15), and junior Natalie Parkman (25:09).

The Liberty Flames won the 2009 Big South Women's Cross Country Championships.? The Virginia Military Institute's Hannah Granger finished first in the women's 5k to take home Runner of the Year honors.

Liberty posted 47 points, followed by VMI (66 points) and Coastal Carolina (76 points).? In fourth-place was High Point with 86 points and Winthrop closed the top five with 117 points.? In sixth was UNC Asheville with 148 points and in seventh was Radford with 172 points.? Gardner-Webb (225) and Charleston Southern (262) rounded out the competing teams.

The Keydets' Hannah Granger finished first with a time of 18:25 to earn Runner of the Year honors.? VMI's Paul Spangler was named Coach of the Year, while Jenna Moye earned Freshman of the Year honors.? Winthrop's Carly Moss was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
