College Races To Start Eye Opener Meet Saturday

The Eye Opener starts the regular weekend season of cross country Saturday with collegiate and high school races scheduled to take place.

The collegiate women take to the starting line at 8 a.m. for a 5k competition, followed by the collegiate men\'s 8k race at 8:15 a.m. High school action begins at 9 a.m. with the boys junior varsity 5k race. The girl\'s varsity race is set for 9:45 a.m. followed by the boy\'s varsity race closing out the day with a 10:30 a.m. start time.

Next weekend in South Carolina is the Coaches Classic, a chance for all athletes to preview the State Championship (Nov. 6) course.

USC Aiken Names David Lyle Head Cross Country For 2004

USC Aiken has named David Lyle as Head Cross Country Coach, Director of Athletics Randy Warrick recently announced. Lyle, a former collegiate runner at Marshall University and a former graduate assistant coach at Middle Tennessee State University, will serve as interim coach for the 2004 season. He replaces Dana Richter, who resigned earlier this month.

Lyle was a member of Marshall's track and field, and cross country teams for four years. In 1997. Following his senior season, the Poca, W.Va., native was selected to the Mid American All-Conference Team. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Merchandising in 2000.

As a graduate assistant coach at Middle Tennessee, from 2000 to 2003, Lyle guided the Blue Raiders' men's and women\'s track team to three Sun Belt Conference championships. A MTSU men's cross country runner claimed the conference title in 2000 and 2001.

Lyle began his duties on Aug. 16, and has worked with the team for more than a week.

In May 2003 Lyle received his Master's in Business Administration from Middle Tennessee State University. Lyle is the husband of Lisa Lyle, USC Aiken's Director of University Housing and Judicial Affairs, and has been employed at Concept H.R., a human resources consulting firm in Aiken, since February.

USC Aiken is entered in the Eye Opener meet this Saturday.
