Charleston Ready for Gene Anderson UNC Invitational

CHARLESTON, S.C. - College of Charleston women's track & field will make one final trek to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the Gene Anderson UNC Invitational on Friday. The meet is the final event before the Southern Conference Championships on Feb. 25-26.

CofC faces opponents from more than 20 different schools, including the host Tar Heels who rank fourth in the Southeast region, according to U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Three Cougars are ranked regionally by event by the USTFCCCA. Sophomore Emily Smith (Rock Hill, S.C./Northwestern) is eighth in the Southeast region in the high jump. The school record holder in the high jump, Smith had a season-high jump of 5'8" at the Clemson Games on Jan. 29.  Smith will compete alongside junior Brynne Johnson (Centreville, Ohio/Centreville) in the high jump at the UNC Invitational.

Johnson is ranked 19th regionally in the pentathlon. Although she will not compete in the multi-event until the SoCon Championships, she will participate in the high jump and the 60-meter hurdles on Friday.

Southern Conference Field Athlete of the Week Jelain McArthur (Laurens, S.C./Laurens District) rounds out Charleston's regionally ranked athletes. The freshman jumper broke her own school record in the triple jump at the Clemson Games with a distance of 39'1¾". She is currently 17th in the Southeast region. In addition to the triple jump, McArthur will compete in the 60-meter hurdles and the long jump at the UNC Invitational.

The action begins at 3 p.m. with the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles as well as the long jump and the triple jump.
