Columbia, S.C. ---The 2002 South Carolina cross country season is officially under way. On September 7, 2002 the South Carolina School For The Deaf and Blind hosted The Eye Opener. On September 14, 2002 the Coaches Classic meet at the Sandhills Research Center in Columbia has led to an interesting cross country season.
The day started off with the boys and girls 7,8, and 9th grade race. Wren Freshman Andy Walls won the boys race in 18:19.1 over teammate Ben Wood (18:21.2).Wren's 7,8, and 9th grade boys won the team title with 40 points over Dorman High School (81). The number one girl finisher in the 7,8, and 9th grade race was Millie Knowlton of Heathwood Hall with a time of 22:01.6 over teammate Cassidy Brewer (22:33.3). In the girls 7,8,and 9th grade race Chapin captured the team title with 30 points over TL Hanna (82).
Next up in competition at the Coaches Classic was the varsity boys race. Steve Boyd of Summerville captured the individual title in 15:32.7 over Greenwood runner Trevor Beesley (15:44.6). Dorman high school captured the boys team title with 109 points over Wade Hampton (G) (144). Angelina Blackmon of Northwestern captured the girls individual varsity title with an exceptional time of 18:05.6 over Spring Valley freshman Kate Niehaus (18:24.9). Spartanburg won the girls team title with 102 points over Summerville (115).
The boys and girls junior varsity races ended the day at the Coaches Classic in Columbia, SC. On the boys side Michael Rella captured the individual title in 17:33.5 over Asher Hoffman (17:46.1) of Wade Hampton (G). Summerville boys captured the team title over Dorman by one point, 46-47. On the girls side Kacie Hodge of Spartanburg captured the title in 21:08.5 over teammate Alexis Phillips (21:20.4). Spartanburg defeated Summerville (45) with 21 points to capture the team title. Results from the Coaches Classic meet are being reviewed and any updates will be changed on the SCRunners website.
Seventy-seven schools and over twenty-two hundred athletes competed in the 2002 Coaches Classic. The Lake Murray Invitational is being held next Saturday, September 21 at Crooked Creek Park in Chapin and the Winthrop Invitational is next Saturday at the Winthrop Coliseum in Rock Hill.
