Five Palmetto State Athletes Bring Home Titles from Dekalb International Classic

Shalyn McMichael (1st, 400 (59.14)-new meet record), Tempest Vance (1st, 400H), Torric Davis (1st, 100(10.71)-new meet record), Toma Walker (1st, 800), and Dennis Martin (1st, 400H (54.73)-new meet record) were the five from South Carolina to bring home titles in their respected events Saturday at the Dekalb International Prep Classic, held on the campus of Georgia Tech in Atlanta.

Other South Carolina finishers include the female 4x400 relay squads of Spring Valley and the Quick Striders that finished one and two, respectively.

Walker finished fourth overall in the 400 in 49.44. Andre Roberts of Columbia finished sixth overall. Robert Thompson of Columbia finished sixth overall in the 800 with Darrian Hodges placing in the top nine following the two lap event.

Five Palmetto state hurdles competed in the 110 event with Martin (14.12) leading the way for South Carolina with a second place finish. Antoine Fant finished fifth (14.69), Christian Nash (14.93) placed sixth, Tony Grout (15.25) finished seventh and Tyrone Murphy (15.40) finished eighth overall.

Also placing in the 400 hurdles on the boy\'s side was Fant (fourth), Murphy (fifth), Nash (sixth) and Grout (seventh).

In the boy\'s shot put Alex Padgett (Tega Cay) finished second with a best throw of 47-06.75. Padgett finished in the third spot following the discus competition.

State 800 girls record holder Jessica Nichols missed the top three by less than one second Saturday in 2:18.41. Columbia\'s Megan Fulks finished seventh out of nine athletes in the two lap event.

Samantha Beardsley and Nichols competed in the three person 1500 event. Beardsley was second in 5:01.68 with Nichols placing third in 5:51.11.

In the 100 hurdle finals Vance finished fourth with Breanna Jones finishing fifth. Brandi Myers of Anderson finished sixth. Jones finished third in the 400 hurdle event.

Carrissa Walls finished third in the girls 100 in 12.91.
