Shrine Bowl Runners will Get Early Start on December Twenty-First

The Shrine Bowl Run in South Carolina was started in 1986 by Everett Stoudenmire, with the help of the South Carolina Track and Cross-Country Coaches Association. This year's run is slated to start at 5:15 a.m on December 21st at the Columbia State House steps. The distance that will be covered by these seniors is a total of 70.8 miles combined. The Shriners use this event to raise money for the Shriner's hospital. The closest Shriner's hospital is located in Greenville.

This year's Shrine Bowl run includes thirty-nine South Carolina high school senior cross-country athletes. The seniors that will compete are Frederick Smith (Sumter), Matthew Johnson (Brookland Cayce), Brian Hoepker (South Aiken), Justin Moats (South Aiken), Michele Milner (Aiken), Bryan Davis (Gilbert), Justin Jones (Ridge View), Billy Grimes (Ridge View), Michael A. Moore, Jr. (Sumter), Lauren Harmon (Pelion), Tim Supplee (Irmo), Brian Leventis (Irmo), Katherine Warden (Dreher), Jon Hardin (Spring Valley), Kendal Forrester (Lexington), Matthew Creggar (Chapin), Reid Touchberry (Fort Dorchester), Matthew P. Elliot (Green Sea Floyds), Brian Jank (Dorman), Nick Holt (Dorman), Jacob McCaskill (Riverside), Joseph Barnett (Riverside), Craig Thompson (Dorman), Brian Reburn (Northwestern), William McKinney (Northwestern), Trevor Strom (Union), Thad Palmer (Union), Matt Holmes (Wade Hampton), David Vass (Eastside), Vicky Echeverria (Riverside), Brende' Smith (Greenville), Tyrone Edwards (Chapman), Charles Kutz (T.L. Hanna), David Payne (Emerald), and Jonathan McAlister (Emerald).

The event is scheduled to last until 12:52 p.m when Frederick Smith and Brende Smith will run the Shrine Bowl game day football into Rock Hill District III Stadium before the start of the game. Frederick Smith will start the event off with a 1.5 mile run.

The Shrine Bowl game between South Carolina and North Carolina is set to kickoff at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Shriner's hospital for Children has received more than fifty-one million dollars from Shrine Bowl Games across the United States. Four hundred and seventy-five thousand children have been rehabilated at the Shriner's Hospitals. The first Carolina Shrine Bowl game was played in Charlotte in 1937. In 2000 the 65th game was moved to Rock Hill, South Carolina.
