Dave Milliman Moose Mile 2018

Travelers Rest, SC

Letter from Jeff Milliman

The largest man to consistently run Sub 2:30 Marathons passed away on Monday (my brother Dave aka "Moose")..

SATURDAY 7/7/18 at 5:00 PM we will gather at Pace (108 South Main Street, Travelers Rest) in celebration of Dave's extraordinary life......
***6pm will be the "MOOSE MILE"....a 1 mile race.....
***Food and drinks will be provided...
***Dr. John Lehman(pastor) will be timing.....

Dave started running more than 50 years ago while in high school....setting many school and course records through College and on into Adulthood.....competing for the legendary Florida Track Club becoming teammates with many of the nation's and world's best runners; including Olympic Marathon Champion Frank Shorter and American Record Holder Marty Liquori.......
He became friends with Olympic Coach Jimmy Carnes....Marty & Jimmy founded the first Running Store Chain in the United States(Athletic Attic-there were close to 200 Athletic Attics worldwide starting in the early 1970's)...Dave went to work with them starting in the beginning......America's running shoe store industry today owes its existence to the concept they paved...An untold number of stores today are owned/run by individuals who were originally hired into the industry by Dave.
As Dave's personal running career went on; he began coaching.....Again, an untold number of runners were influenced by Dave over more than four decades...

"Dave was always so kind and supportive of me. I will always hold memories of his kindness close to me.”-Keith Brantley(Olympic Marathoner)

“We had a lot of good times running and talking about the old guys. I woke up today and thought about Dave and I want you to know that I consider it a blessing to have spent many times running, racing and just talking.”-Jerry Slaven(Florida Track Club)

“Dave was my biggest fan. I appreciated his enthusiasm for my running and those days runnning for Dave were the best running memories I have.”-Ricky Quintana

“He was never one to brag about himself, and only sought to support and affirm the minuscule accomplishments I made in my running journey. I’ll never forget him.”-Lee Evans

“I respected Dave and will miss him as we all will. I only knew him for a short period of his life and he made a big impact on my life and made me a better person.”-Jason Wise

“No shock that he put up a helluva fight. He was a tough SOB.”-Steve Sims

“The watch keeps ticking no matter what. You can’t stop for breaks; keep moving forward and do the best you can.”-Larry Frederick

“It’s not about how long you live but how you contribute. ....It’s about the baton pass to a new generation.....In the end, you are somewhere in the middle, part of a never ending process. The future will never remember what was in your bank account or what kind of car you drove. The future will remember that wild ride of life where you believed in others and left a gift behind for someone else to dream the impossible. The gift was your own life. It does not matter whether it was long or short. What did you leave behind?”-Geoff Hollister
