PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Mauldin graduate Alyssa Kulik finished first in the college women's steeplechase championship at The Penn Relays Thursday night.

Under tough conditions, Sun Valley's Will Taylor and Green Hope's boys were victorious.  Kimberly Spano of North Mecklenburg and Providence's girls both took runners-up spots. 

2006 state cross country Class AAAA state champion Mauldin Mavericks girls are ranked no. 5 in the Nike Team Nationals southeast region preseason poll, released last week. Senior Alyssa Kulik captured the individual state cross country title in 2006.

First week of action in the Nike Team Nationals Southeast Region included races from pre-season ranked boys (SE#10) and girls squads (SE#9) from Chapel Hill as both won their opening races of the season in impressive fashion, while other bubble teams made names for themselves such as South Carolina\'s Mauldin girls.
