Mike Moore Shrine Bowl Run deadline nears

The 2015 Mike Moore Shrine Bowl Run applications are available (available below) and due Nov. 2 by 3 p.m.

Moore, the second coach of the Run, passed away earlier this season.

The event is scheduled for Dec. 19 and scrunners will be onsite.

Run history

The team is chosen based on performances of seniors on the day of the state meet.

The standards are (Boys: sub-17, girls: sub-20).

Moore was chosen as the first Run coach, however he said to Jim Kilbreth in 1986 he should have the position for winning the state title, according to Kilbreth.

Kilbreth said about naming the Run after Moore, "You could not have named the Run after a finer person."

Everette Stoudenmire and Moore laid the groundwork for the Run, Kilbreth told scrunners.com.

Marie Kernell of St. Joseph's is the 2015 Shrine Bowl Run coach. This is the 30th year of the Run. David Smith of Greer Middle College will assist Kernell and serve as head coach in 2016.

The Shriner's hospital for Children has received more than 51 million dollars from Shrine Bowl Games across the United States. Four hundred and seventy-five thousand children have been rehabilitated at Shriner's Hospitals. The first Carolina Shrine Bowl game was played in Charlotte in 1937.

The Shrine Bowl runners are escorted by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and are managed by the Shriners of the Jamil Temple. The Run starts in Greenville and finishes at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg 33 miles later.
