Riverside coach Eric Cummings talks about receiving the USTFCCCA honor, his family and the program.
What does it mean to receive the honor?
This is a great honor from a great association. This honor really is about the girls in the RHS program and the all miles and time they put into their team and their training. This is also an honor to their parents for the sacrifices they make with their time and money to allow the girls to put in all the work. The honor also goes to my wife and family. She makes it possible for me to coach these great student athletes. She takes on the role of a single mother to our boys during the season (they all do sports and clubs and scouts and she makes it all happen).
What do you see your team doing in the future?
I see the program growing based on the previous 10 years of work that have been put in by the previous runners. We developed a culture here at Riverside and our team is more of a family and the kids take pride in that fact. They also know the history of the program and after an undefeated season with the Girls Varsity, Girls JV and Girls 'C' Team, the girls are very motivated to try and repeat.
What to do hope runners and parents get out of the sport?
I strive that our runners get out a sense of pride for their teammates, a sense of self-confidence within themselves, and a life long lasting memory of their high school careers. This is a very social sport and if they can take what we teach within the sport, they hopefully will be a better well-rounded individual.
I hope our parents see that we are teaching more than just the physical aspect of running. I want them to know that we are trying to instill pride/self-confidence/a healthy life-style/and memories for both them and their children.
