Stratford senior state champion Brittany Jefferson remains in induced coma

Stratford senior 100-meter hurdles state champion Brittany Jefferson was involved in a serious accident this past weekend, according to Colleen Mitchell.

Mitchell is the mother of 2005 Class AAAA 800-meter state champion Jessica Nichols. Nichols now attends the University of South Carolina.

"She (Brittany) is in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston (and) has already under went two surgeries and due another this Thursday to repair her pelvic," said Mitchell. "Her mother is asking for all B positive blood type to donate to the Red Cross under the name of Brittany Jefferson for she will need more blood for her next upcoming surgery." Update: scrunners.com received an e-mail this morning from Jefferson's Mother, Melanie, they are asking for any blood donors, not just B positive.

Jefferson, scheduled to compete for Limestone College during the 2008-2009 season, finished first in the hurdles in 14.94 seconds and sixth in the long jump during the state meet on May 9-10.

"The entire Limestone College family is praying for her and I will be there for anything that the family needs," said coach Kevin Vees. "She is a very strong young women and will pull through this no matter how long it takes."

"From all, especially track fans our prayers go out to her and her family for a full recovery," Mitchell said.

Stratford High School is located in Goose Creek.
