Sydney McLaughlin made history on Sunday, July 11 when she placed third in the 400m hurdles final at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials to earn a spot to the Olympic Games in Rio. McLaughlin is sixteen years old and turns seventeen the week before the Games, which makes her the youngest U.S. Olympian since 1972. Her time of 54.15 is a new world junior record, American junior record and national high school record, but none of it was easy.
