Northwestern alumna Emily Smith wins SoCon high jump

CLEMSON -- Northwestern alumna Emily Smith, a freshman at College of Charleston, sealed the Southern Conference high jump title earlier today at Clemson University's indoor facility.

Friends and family members, including high school coach Calvin Hudgins (interview with Hudgins), watched Smith clear five feet, 10 inches, a NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

The former Trojan cleared every height on her first attempt, until the 5-10 mark where she cleared on her second attempt.

Smith was seeded second coming into the meet.

Smith was named freshmen of the year following the meet Sunday.
