Interview: Ridge View's Henderson signs with Gamecocks

Ridge View senior Sierra Henderson signed a National Letter of Intent with the University of South Carolina, the Blazer told scrunners.com. Henderson talks about her signing and season.

scrunners: What made you decide to sign with USC?

henderson: I decided to sign with USC because I was not only fond of the track program and the coaching staff, but I was impressed with the school, academically. They have a wonderful psychology program, which really sparked my interest.

scrunners: Where else did you take visits to?

henderson: I had originally planned to visit the University of Georgia as well, but once I went on my visit to Carolina, I knew that's where my heart was.

scrunners: Please explain your experience with being recruited?

henderson: All the coaches who were recruiting me were very consistent and kind.  But both coach (Curtis) Frye and coach (Stan) Rosenthal were very genuine and caring when it came to my choice. They made me feel like my choosing the University of South Carolina would be beneficial for the team.

scrunners: What did you learn from the college recruiting experience and what would you recommend to future college athletes?

henderson: During the recruiting process, I learned that it is important to take your future seriously, because college is just the beginning of your journey in adulthood. As I always tell my best friend Tamara (Smith), who is currently a junior and one of my teammates; it is important to start early. Time is so valuable and you must come to a point where you sit down and really decide if you are willing to make the commitment of being a college athlete...if you are willing to push yourself above and beyond to succeed.

scrunners: What are you looking to achieve this outdoor season and the future?

henderson: I definitely plan to perform much better than I have in my past seasons. I have determined in my mind that I can only progress from here, regressing is not an option.

scrunners: Do you feel relieved with this major decision finalized?

henderson: Yes! I feel very relieved...

scrunners: What is the one thing you would like to say to your coaches and parents?

henderson: I would tell my coaches that I appreciate them believing in me and always pushing me to do more, just because they knew I could. At time, they saw the potential in me, even when I couldn't. And to my parents: I love and thank God for you. You have always supported and encouraged me. Mom, I can't even begin to explain how much you mean to me, so I will just say thank you.

scrunners: What would you want to say to your teammates upon the end of the season?

henderson: To my teammates, stay focused and work hard. Never give up on your dreams. I love you guys! Maya (Adams), Tamara and Eureka (Jones): Despite all that we've been through, I can still say that I love you guys with all my heart, and now we truly know that nothing can stop us. And to you all, keep God in all that you do.
