Eastside Boys, Riverside Girls Hold Series Leads

Next up in the scrunners series presented by Go-Green Events is the Low Country Invitational this Saturday.

By Ed Boehmke

After a rare weekend without cross country meets, the season picked up with multiple invitationals around the state.  Hurricane Florence caused the postponement or cancellation of many meets.  Some were made up this past weekend such as the Mike Moore Lake Murray Invitational.  Others, that were already scheduled for this weekend were held in much better conditions than the previous two weekends.

Even though it was still warm, the
Starlight Reservation Run avoids a lot of the heat by running under the lights.  As the only night high school cross country race in South Carolina, the Riverside Starlight race is the third race in the Go-Green SCRunners Cross Country Series.  Twenty-four teams competed in two varsity divisions.

The meet is the second one of the series held in the upstate so many of the leaders of this weeks' standings are from the upstate.  There is one more meet in the Upstate, Southside's
GTC Tiger Classic on October 6, moved to this date because of the hurricane.  On the same date is the Darlington Cross Country Carnival.  The following weekend is the last in the series, the Sandhills Invitational.  Next weekend is the Low Country Invitational which will give the Lower State teams a chance to "catch up" with the Upper State ones in the series.

Riverside runner
Jessie Crowley won the Elite race.  The win gives her two scores and raises her from 26th after Bob Jenkins SCTCCCA Coaches Classic to ninth in the series standing.  Macey Morgan of Mauldin takes over the Series top spot with her runner-up performance - moving her up one spot.  Caroline Linen of St. Joseph's moves from third to second, Kennedy Roush moves into third from sixth, Elizabeth Rogers moves up to fourth from sixth and Emily Arenas of Walhalla moves from 11th to fifth.  Crowley and Greer Middle College's Morgan Summey are the first two with only two scores. Summey dropped from first to 13th.

There is also a new leader in the boys' series.
The Starlight's Elite race winner, Boiling Springs' Kade Gosnell led from beginning to end and moved up from third place in the third week of the series.  Riverside's Andrew Smith moves from fifth to third, Brendan McTigue of St. Joseph's moves from ninth to fourth and Lucas Conti of Hillcrest from sixth to fifth.  Noah White of Eastside retains his spot in second. Greer's Coen Roberts dropped from first to 10th and Alan Deogracias of Blythwood dropped from fourth to 12th. Both did not run in the Riverside series race and are the first two with only two scores.

Riverside, Dorman, J.L. Mann, Mauldin and Wade Hampton remain as the top five girls teams.  Byrnes and St. Joseph's move up two spots each to sixth and seventh, respectively.  Hillcrest and Walhalla each moved up three places to ninth and 10th.  Wren is the highest team with two scores in 13th place.

The top three in the boys team chase remain unchanged - Eastside, St. Joseph's and Hillcrest.  Current places four through nine - Dorman, Riverside, Wade Hampton, Byrnes, Boiling Springs and Blue Ridge - move up from their last weeks' rankings of five, six, eight, 11th, and 13th.  River Bluff is now in 10th place and is the first team with only two scores.

The number of overall teams in the competition remains the same at 106 schools.
There are currently 92 girls and 94 boys that have scored points so far this year.

Look for a lot of changes next week as the
Go-Green SCRunners Cross Country Series goes to the Lower State for the Low Country Invitational at James Island.
