Catching up With Eastside's Spain Vaughan

"Spain Vaughan has been the most talented runner that I have coached.  It is difficult to judge because of the nature of cross country, but Spain may be the fastest runner in Eastside history.  He is motivated and does exactly as he has been asked to do. He has progressed very well and I anticipate that he will be a very good college runner.  He was elected as a team captain by his teammates this year and it is not just because of his accomplishments. He makes all of his teammates feel welcome and encourages them to be the best runner that they can be. His leadership and the impact of his work ethic will be felt for a lot of years to come at Eastside." - Rob Henderson, Eastside coach

It has been very abnormal but thankful for the opportunity to run.

Do you have a specific motivation for this season?
My motivation is to run for God, my family, my team, and the closest people to me. Our team wants a state championship really bad.

How are you looking at the rest of the season?
I'm enjoying every race for what it is because nothing is guaranteed.

What's training going to be like leading up to state?
We will continue to work hard and prepare as a team.

What has your mileage and workouts been like this season?
The workouts have been similar to my previous seasons but more reps. I have also increased my miles slightly this year.

Any postseason plans?
Now with Foot Locker cancelled everything is kind of up in the air.  I will probably take some time off and start getting ready for track.

Any goals for outdoor track and field?
I want to continue to improve to give myself an opportunity to win state in the 3200.

What are your goals for after high school?
I hope to have an opportunity to run in college

How do you prepare for a race on race day?
I stick to the normal routine of eating light and waking up at least 3 hours before my race. I just try not to do anything abnormal.

What hobbies do you have outside of running?
I love to play basketball and watch college football during my free time.
