Coastal Carolina\'s Amber Campbell Qualifies For Hammer Finals

Coastal Carolina's Amber Campbell launched a throw of 218' 1" on her first throw of the women's hammer throw preliminaries to automatically qualify for the finals at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Sacramento, CA, July 12. Campbell will now compete for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team Thursday, July 15, at 7:45 p.m. with the top three that have made the Olympic standard advancing to Athens.

Jamine Moton, a former women's track and field standout for Clemson, qualified for the finals of the hammer throw at the US Olympic Trials on Monday. Moton recorded a qualifying round best mark of 214'1" to post the sixth-best throw of the day and advance to Thursday's finals.

Four of USC's former athletes advanced to event finals. Otis Harris advanced to the finals of the 400m, Lisa Barber and Demetria Washington both advanced to the semi-finals of the 400m and Dawn Ellerbe advanced to the finals of the hammer.

Other news: South Carolina today announced it has hired one of the top sprints and jumps coaches in the country. Jeff McAuley joins the Gamecock family as the newest assistant coach with the Gamecock track and field program. McAuley replaces Kevin Brown who took a position with Vector Sports Management last month. A respected veteran of track and field coaching, McAuley came to South Carolina from Penn State University. Prior to working with the Penn State women's program the past two years, he was at Cal State Northridge, his alma mater, where he served as an assistant coach for seven seasons.
