Thoughts with Lexington Distance Runner Ava Fowler

When did you first start competing in the sport, and do you recall any of your childhood events?
I first started at the end of eighth grade.

Was there a certain moment when you realized you'd be able to compete at such a high level?
State my freshman year I placed third in the two mile. I remember racing people that I thought I would never be able to run with. I focused on my race and was really proud of myself.

A look at track and field rankings

What are some bumps in the road that you've encountered when it comes to training for different events during the season?
Some bumps have been choosing which events to focus on. I really like running the 800, mile, and two mile. It's really hard to do well in all three so I usually only race two at meets.

How did COVID impact your training as you prepared for the season?
COVID has impacted my training a lot. At group runs we social distance and wear masks unless we are actively running.

If you had to pick: Track and Field or Cross Country, and why?
Track and field because there is more variety of events.

How is the college recruiting process going, and what schools are you looking at?
College recruiting has been pretty difficult this year, but I have been able to talk to some really great coaches/teams. I am considering a lot of schools, I haven't really narrowed down much.

Where are you going to college? If you have already committed, what made you choose them?
I am not sure yet.

On her role models: Basically my whole family because they support me no matter what and have taught me so much outside of running.

Is there another track event you wish you were good at? What is appealing about it?
I would say the steeplechase because I have not really had the chance to race one. It looks like it would be a fun challenge.

What are some hobbies and interests you have outside of running?
Some hobbies I have are listening to music and thrifting.

Who is your role model, and why?
Basically my whole family because they support me no matter what and have taught me so much outside of running.

Everyone has a bucket list, so give us some of the things on your list!
N/A, I am not sure yet.

What is the best advice you have received?
Find your red line. Coach Ed told me this I think my freshman year. It means to run your race and to run based on how you feel.

What is your favorite pre-race snack, tradition, etc.?
Eating pasta the night before a morning race and oatmeal in the morning.

If you could do a sport other than XC/Track, what sport would it be, and why?
I would do basketball because it is a lot of fun.
