CHARLESTON, S.C. - College of Charleston track & field athlete Chelsea Taylor (Seneca, S.C./Seneca) has been selected as the Southern Conference Field Athlete of the Week for the week ending on Jan. 23.
The freshman pole-vaulter broke the school record at the UNC Classic on Jan. 23. Her jump of 11'5¾" was three-quarters of an inch higher than the previous school record, set in 2008 by Summer Chambless. Taylor placed second in the event at the UNC Classic, which was just her second collegiate meet.
Taylor is the first CofC athlete to earn the award since Emily Smith was named the SoCon Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 29, 2009. Former Cougar Chakosa Lance also received the award in 2006.
UNC Greensboro's Katie Hansen was named the SoCon Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.
The women's track & field team departs for Clemson where the Cougars will compete in the Clemson games on Friday and Saturday.
