Cougars Return to Clemson for Meet this Weekend

CHARLESTON, S.C. - College of Charleston women's track & field returns to Clemson, S.C. almost two months after participating in the Roaring Tiger Open to compete in the Clemson Games this weekend.

Charleston is riding a strong performance at the Kent Taylor UNC Classic on Jan. 23. Freshman Chelsea Taylor (Seneca, S.C./Seneca) broke the school record in the pole vault with a height of 11'5¾". Her jump was three-quarters of an inch farther than the previous record set in 2008. Taylor received the Southern Conference Indoor Field Athlete of the Week award as a result of her performance.

Freshman jumper Jelain McArthur (Laurens, S.C./Laurens District) also set new school records last weekend. She recorded the two fastest times in school history in the 60-meter hurdles - running a time of 8.96 seconds in the finals after finishing the race in 9.14 seconds in the preliminary competition. She also leapt a distance of 37'8" in the triple jump to surpass the previous school record by 1'6".

The Clemson Games kick off on Friday morning with the women's pentathlon at 11 a.m. Junior Brynne Johnson (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville), the current CofC record-holder with 3,063 points in the pentathlon, will represent Charleston in the event. The first event of the pentathlon will be the 60-meter hurdles, followed by the high jump, shot put, long jump and 800-meters.

Individual track & field events will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday with the women's 60-meter hurdle trials and the long jump. Competition continues on Saturday with the women's shot put being the first event the Cougars will participate in.
