McArthur Tops Her Own Record on Final Day of Clemson Games

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Freshman jumper Jelain McArthur (Laurens, S.C./Laurens District) topped her own record as she captured the triple jump on the final day of the Clemson Games.

Just one day after setting a new school record in the long jump, McArthur beat the triple jump record that she set last weekend at the Kent Taylor UNC Classic. Her distance of 39'1¾" is 1'5¾" further than her jump last weekend. McArthur now owns three College of Charleston records.

Sophomore Emily Smith (Rock Hill, S.C./Northwestern) placed second in the high jump with a season-best height of 5'8". She was just 1¼" behind champion Maya Pressley of Auburn.

In the throws, sophomore Keisha Thacker (York, S.C./York Comprehensive) advanced to the finals of the shot put after finishing ninth in the preliminaries with a season-best throw of 33'7¼". Freshman Casey McKee (Johnsonville, S.C./Johnsonville) narrowly missed the cutoff for the finals with a 10th-place throw of 32'11¼". McKee also set a personal record in the weight throw, hurling the 20-lb. weight a distance of 39'4" to come in ninth.

On the track, two Cougars recorded top-10 times in the 800 meters. Sophomore Alyssa D'Orazio (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) crossed the finish line in 2:22.78 to place fifth while redshirt-senior Emily Nagle (Annapolis, Md./Richmond) finished ninth with a time of 2:24.90. Newcomer Tierney Willard (Midlothian, Va./NC State) recorded a time of 2:30.67 for 16th place.

Distance runner Erin Stoddard (Mauldin, S.C./J.L. Mann) placed second in the 5,000 meters while recording a time of 19:26.50.

In the sprints, junior Mary Zolga (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) shaved. 10 of a second off her personal-best time in the 200-meter race to place 18th with a time of 27:17 seconds. Zolga is the third-fastest Cougar in school history in the 200 meters. Junior Isabel Boersma (Franklin, Tenn./Ravenwood) completed the race in 28.15 seconds for 22nd place.

Charleston returns to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the second time this season to compete in the UNC Meet on Feb. 12.
