McArthur Receives SoCon Indoor Track Athlete of the Week Honors

CHARLESTON, S.C. - College of Charleston freshman jumper Jelain McArthur (Laurens, S.C./Laurens District) was named the Southern Conference Indoor Field Athlete of the Week for the period ending Feb. 4.

McArthur set school records in both the long jump and the triple jump at the Clemson Games on Jan. 29-30. The 5-8 freshman jumped a distance of 18'1 2/3" to place third in the long jump on the first day of competition. Her jump eclipsed the previous school record by almost 10 inches.

She surpassed her own school record in the triple jump on the second day of the meet. She won the event with a distance of 39'1¾"; 1'5 ¾" further than the record she set at the UNC Classic on Jan. 24.

McArthur is the second Cougar to receive the Indoor Field Athlete of the Week honor in as many weeks. Freshman pole vaulter Chelsea Taylor (Seneca, S.C./Senca) was named Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 28 after breaking the school record at the UNC Classic.

The Citadel's Micah Wessinger was named the Southern Conference Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.

The women's track & field team resumes its indoor schedule on Feb. 12 when the Cougars visit Chapel Hill, S.C. for the UNC Meet.
