CLEMSON, S.C. - College of Charleston sits in fifth place after the first day of the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Sophomore Emily Smith (Rock Hill, S.C./Northwestern) earned 10 of CofC's 22 points by winning her second straight SoCon crown in the high jump. Her height of 5'8" was two full inches higher than runner-up Chenelle Terry of Samford. Also scoring in the high jump was junior Brynne Johnson (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) who placed eighth with a jump of 5' ¼".
Johnson had a record day in the pentathlon where her score of 3,251 points beat her previous school record by 167 points to place her fourth in the competition. She put up career highs in the 60-meter hurdles (9.53), shot put (32'1½") and long jump (16'11¼").
Junior Isabel Boersma (Franklin, Tenn./Ravenwood) also performed well in the pentathlon, finishing just behind Johnson in fifth place with a career-best 3,110 points. Her score is 90 points better than her previous personal record and keeps her second in school history. Boersma tied for first place in the high jump portion of the pentathlon with a personal record jump of 5'2¼". She also set a career high in the in the long jump (16'10'¾"). The duo earned a total of nine points for the Cougars.
Freshman Jelain McArthur (Laurens, S.C./Laurens District) picked up a point for her team when she leapt a distance of 17'9¾" in the long jump to come in eighth. McArthur also completed the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.95 seconds to finish sixth in the preliminaries and qualify for the finals on Sunday.
Junior Mary Zolga (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) ran a blistering 58.11 time in the 400-meter preliminaries to finish third and advance to the finals tomorrow. Already the school record holder in the event, Zolga shaved 35 seconds off her time from last year's conference championships.
Sophomore Kristen Wolfe (Midlothian, Va./James River) also advanced past the preliminaries in her event, the 800 meters. Her time of 2:18.65 placed her eighth in the primaries and makes her the second-fastest runner in CofC school history.
The day ended with the women's distance medley relay, where Charleston scored its last point with a season-best time of 12:11.03 to finish eighth. Sophomore Callen Powers (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) ran the first leg, followed by junior Saskia Kalmeijer (Brussels, Belgium/Pope), redshirt-freshman Tierney Willard (Midlothian, Va./NC State) and anchored by Wolfe.
The Cougars hold a two-point lead over sixth-place Samford. Day two begins with the women's pole vault, where freshman Chelsea Taylor (Seneca, S.C./Seneca) will represent CofC.
