CLEMSON, S.C. - College of Charleston women's track picked up 16.6 points on the second day of the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at Clemson. The Cougars placed sixth with a two-day score of 38.5 points.
Smith earned all-conference honors while three CofC rookies were selected to the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team for being one of the top three first-years to finish in their event. Smith's accolade came as a result of her second straight title in the high jump, which she won yesterday with a height of 5'8".
Freshman Chelsea Taylor (Seneca, S.C./Seneca) earned three and a half points with a tie for fifth place in the pole vault. Taylor cleared a height of 11'1 ¾" to earn all-freshman honors.
Jumper Jelain McArthur (Laurens, S.C./Laurens District) was named to the all-freshman team in two different events. After advancing to the finals in the 60-meter hurdles yesterday, McArthur ran a blistering time of 8.85 seconds to place fourth and knock eight-hundredths of a second of her personal record and the all-time school record. She picked up two points for the Cougars.
McArthur also scored points in the triple jump where she finished seventh with a distance of 38'9 ¾". Her jump earned her a second all-freshman accolade and two points for a total of seven points on Friday for the Cougars.
Also qualifying for the finals yesterday, junior Mary Zolga (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) broke the CofC school record for the second time in two days in the 400-meter race. She crossed the finish line with a time of 57.83 seconds, .26 of a second faster than yesterday to come in sixth and score two points for her team.
One day after recording a new personal-best time of 2:18.65 to qualify for the finals of the 800 meters, sophomore Kristen Wolfe (Midlothian, Va./James River) recorded a time of 2:23.81 to place eighth and pick up one point for the Cougars.
Freshman Casey McKee set a new personal record in the weight throw with a distance of 41'8 ¾". Her throw beat her old career high by 8'¼" and placed her 10th in the competition. She is the third Cougar to garner all-freshman honors this year.
The day finished with the 4x400 meter relay, where Charleston earned its final two points of the meet. Junior Saskia Kalmeijer (Brussels, Belgium/Pope) ran the first leg of the race, followed by sophomore Callen Powers (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) and junior Brynne Johnson (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville). Zolga ran the final leg of the relay which finished seventh with a season-best time of 4:07.62.
Western Carolina claimed its sixth championship in program history with a total of 174.5 points.
Select CofC athletes will attend the Virginia Tech Last Chance Meet on Mar. 6 in a final attempt to qualify for NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
