Salute to Seniors: Meet Lower Richland's Destany Wilson

The Class of 2025 MileSplit SC salute to seniors series continues in July with Lower Richland's track and field athlete Destany Wilson.

Name / school and event personal bests
Destany Wilson, Lower Richland. 100 and 400 meter hurdler and javelin thrower.

What was your most memorable race/competition?
Coaches classic qualifiers, the meet I finally got my rhythm of three stepping hurdles.

Out of all your high school accomplishments, which stands out the most?
Graduating from Midland Technical College.

If you could do it all over again, what would you change about your athletic career in high school?
I would change my mentality and put my best foot forward the first year of track.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?
One of my most difficult obstacles was using track as "get a way" method from what I was really going through outside of school and sports. After that phase passed I started being more focused on hurdles and getting a better mindset and once I changed my mindset I got better results, and if I did that the first year I could of done extremely better than what I've done my last year of high school track.

What advice do you have for younger athletes?
Don't put in your head that you can't do something because you can just push through and trust God.

How have your coaches influenced your performances and your life goals?
My coaches pushed me past my limits and made me work as hard as possible to be better.

What kind of impact did your family have on your time as a high school student-athlete?
They supported me even though every time I got hurt they wanted to quit but they also told me to push forward and don't stop achieving.

What are your college or post-high school plans?
Going to a four year college to major in interior design and business to become a CEO of and interior design company.

What do you hope to achieve after high school?
I want to be as successful as possible through my career and passion.

Do you see yourself coaching in the future? Please explain and if so, what level and why?
No, it is not my passion to coach.

Shout-outs?
Coach Ricky Griddine, Coach Andrea Lucas, Coach Jaylen Bacon, Coach Micheal Steward and Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins. If it wasn't for them I wouldn't be where I am today, academically and sports-wise.

If there is one thing in the world you could do, what would it be and why?
I would run 100-meter hurdles world record because I want to know how it feels.
