CHARLESTON, S.C. - College of Charleston freshman jumper Jelain McArthur (Laurens, S.C./Laurens District) earned the first Southern Conference Track Athlete of the Week award of the 2010 outdoor season.
McArthur set two school records and registered three top-two finishes in the team's season opener at the Palmetto Invitational on Mar. 12. She placed first in the 100-meter hurdles with a record-breaking time of 14.75 seconds. Her time was 27 hundredths of a second faster than the previous record.
She posted second-place finishes in the 200 meters and triple jump. Her jump of 38'3¼" surpassed the existing record by more than a foot.
This is the second time the rookie has been named SoCon Athlete of the Week. She was selected Indoor Track Athlete of the Week on Feb. 4.
The Cougars travel to Conway, S.C. to compete in the Shamrock Invitational this weekend. McArthur will participate in the 100-meter hurdles on Friday and the 200 meters on Saturday.
