19th Annual Shrine Bowl Run Saturday

The 2004 Shrine Bowl Run will take place this Saturday. The run, in its 19th year, will start at Greenville Shriner\'s Hospital and end at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg, home of the Wofford Terriers.

The event is scheduled to start around 8:40 Saturday morning following a ceremony. The runners will start to join together at 7:30 Saturday morning.

17 senior runners from high schools around the state will transport the game day ball early Saturday morning, Dec. 18.

Will Noble (Laurens), Aubrey Darnell (Ridge View), Brandon Hudgins (Northwestern), Jeremy Hunsaker (Gilbert), Alex Bush (South Aiken), Will Jeffries (Summerville), Dan Wagoner (Dorman), Jonathan Bakutes (Ridge View), Ben Sloan (Dorman), Jordan Lybrand (Blue Ridge), Joey Geller (Ridge View), Daniel Stephens (Dorman), Michael Grothe (Fort Mill), James Niver(Wade Hampton (G)), David Somers (Spartanburg), Sunday Ford (Wren) and Theresa Verostek (Northwestern) make up the senior athletes that were chosen for the team based on their state meet performances.

The Shrine Bowl Runners are escorted by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and are managed by the Shriners of the Jamil Temple. Mr. Everette Stoudenmire of Columbia is entering his 19th year as manager of the Shrine Bowl Runs.

Bobby Urban (Dorman) is the head coach of the Shrine Bowl Run and Jeff Buys is the assistant to Urban. Buys is the head coach at Ridge View and will be named the 2005 Shrine Bowl Run Head Coach.

The Shrine Bowl Run in South Carolina was started in 1986 by Everett Stoudenmire, with the help of the South Carolina Track and Cross-Country Coaches Association. The Shriner\'s hospital for Children has received more than fifty-one million dollars from Shrine Bowl Games across the United States. Four hundred and seventy-five thousand children have been rehabilated at the Shriner\'s Hospitals. The first Carolina Shrine Bowl game was played in Charlotte in 1937.
