CofC Track & Field Competes in Georgia Tech Invitational

ATLANTA, Ga. - Two jumpers and a middle-distance runner represented College of Charleston at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Freshman Jelain McArthur (Laurens, S.C./Laurens District) began and ended the meet for the Cougars, participating in the 100-meter hurdles and triple jump. She placed 21st in the preliminary hurdles with a time of 14.15 while running into a strong headwind. She missed qualifying for the finals for just the second time all year.

"This is some of the best competition on the East Coast," head coach Amy Seago said. "Jelain had a great start and won her heat but just had a headwind which didn't help things."

McArthur also earned a 21st-place finish in the triple jump on Saturday with a distance of 39'1¾". She finishes her rookie season as the school recordholder in the 100-meter hurdles, long and triple jumps.

Sophomore Kirsten Wolfe (Midlothian, Va./James River) finished her season on Friday in the steeplechase. She finished the 3,000-meter race in 11:20.41 to come in 13th place.

Sophomore Emily Smith (Rock Hill, S.C./Northwestern) tied for 12th place in the high jump, clearing 5'7".

Smith is the sole Charleston athlete with a chance to compete in the NCAA Preliminary East Region Round. The top 48 athletes in each event will compete with the top 12 advancing to the NCAA Championships. Smith is currently 42nd on the East Coast and will find out if she has been chosen to compete in Greensboro, N.C. on May 28-29 on Monday evening.
