Dennis Martin moved from fourth in the preliminaries of the 55-meter hurdles to first in the finals with a US No. 1 time of 7.56 at the LSU High School Invitational on Jan. 8.
\"I felt Dennis (Martin) ran well this weekend considering he had to undergo major surgery back in October for an injury sustained in an accident, said Westside coach Rod Cowan. \"The meet was full of southern track stars and Dennis represented SC in a fine manner. Another hurdler (Mo Brown) finished fourth in the same race with Dennis.\"
Martin, a senior at Westside ran for the Quick Striders Track Club, directed by Sam Kennedy. Keshia Haughton was a multi-event athlete at Clemson that is now at Westside. Haughton will coach sprints and hurdles and relays at Westside, replacing Clemson bound coach KB Brown.
\"I ran with a lot of confidence at the meet, that\'s why I think I ran fast along with some other technical changes with my block start,\" said Martin. \"For this season my goals for indoor are to win Nike Indoor and PR with a time of 7.2 and outdoor I plan to break my 400 hurdle state record and break the 110 hurdle state record. The next indoor meets I\'ll be attending are UNC on Jan. 22 and Clemson on Jan. 29.
Martin\'s teammate Mo Brown finished fourth in the 55 hurdles in 7.71. Brown finished first in the preliminaries in 7.66.
\"Training is going well for us and we hope to have a competitive season,\" Cowan said. \"I recently replaced KB Browns departure to Clemson\'s Women (track) with a great young coach Keshia Haughton. Keshia was a multi-athlete at Clemson under Marcia Noad. Keshia will coach the hurdles and help with sprints and relays.\"
\"I am the new track and field assistant coach here at Westside and it\'s been a great experience so far working with the the boys and girls team,\" Haughton said. This weekend the team went to LSU and did a great job for their first track meet this season. I am look to be a great contribution to these already talented kids.\"
