SCTCCCA Honors Top Cross Country Athletes, Uniform Rule Addressed Saturday

The South Carolina Track and Cross Country Coaches Association honored Spring Valley junior Kate Niehaus and senior Reid Wilson as Outstanding Female and Male Athletes from the cross country season at the SCTCCCA winter meeting Saturday.

Both Niehaus and Wilson ran the fastest times at the State Championships on Nov. 6, winning their respected 4A races. Niehaus, a junior captured her third consecutive title at the meet, setting two state meet records and competing at Footlocker Nationals all three years of her career. Wilson, a senior confirmed at the meeting he is playing soccer this spring.

Following the honoring of Niehaus and Wilson each classifications' presidents handed out Cross Country Coach of the Year Awards to Calvin Hudgins (4A Boys, Northwestern), Bobby Urban (4A Girls, Dorman), Mike Foley (3A Boys, Blue Ridge), Paul Masse (3A Girls, Greer), Jimmy Copeland (1A/2A Boys, Gilbert), and Rodney Adamee (1A/2A Girls, Christ Church). Each coach honored captured the state title in their classification.

The Assistant Track and Field Coach of the Year award was handed out to Brian Rutherford (Summerville). Rick Crumpler (Spring Valley) was honored as assistant coach of the year, however Crumpler was not present at the meeting.

Jeff Buys (Ridgeview), reported that the Shrine Bowl Run raised 50-thousand dollars for the Shriner's Hospital. The Shriners raise money for each mile that the select group of seniors run prior to the start of the Shrine Bowl Game. Buys served as Assistant Shrine Bowl Coach in 2004 and is the 2005 head coach. The 2005 assistant coach will be announced at the summer meeting.

SCTCCCA President John Jones addressed the recently passed NFHS rule on uniforms. This rule allows athletes to wear body suits, however on recommendation of the coaches association the high school league is requiring all athletes from South Carolina that travel to sanctioned meets in and out of state, wear shorts over any body suit. This rule, not only affects South Carolina athletes, but athletes from other states that participate in meets such as Taco Bell Classic and the Trojan Relays. In question of the uniform rule Rod Cowan of Westside asked why wrestlers are permitted to wear body suits.

Jones mentioned at the meeting how the two-day state meet schedule will stay the same as the 2004 season. Jones also mentioned how the indoor track proposal is a complicated issue and will be addressed in future meetings. Jones also recommended that coaches talk to school administration about indoor track. Jones also announced that he is stepping down from his athletic director position at Spring Valley this May, due to a district policy that won't allow an athletic director to coach.

Jim Kilbreth of Spartanburg announced that Jones will be inducted as the spring Hall of Fame inductee at Coaches Classic.

Urban proposed in the meeting that the state cross country meet be moved back to Fort Jackson and if Hilton Field is not available to hold the meet somewhere other than Clemson Sandhills Research Center. The motion was passed unanimously.
