Nichols Running For Records

Jessica D. Nichols, a junior from Berkeley High School is back on the circuit of track and field. Missing from action last year due to hip injuries she didn't compete in Summerville Outback Invitational.

For the first time NIchols skipped running summer Junior Olympic Track and Field with Mount Pleasant Recreation, coached by Tami Dennis.

Instead, Nichols spent her summer in physical therapy at Sports Spin and Industrial under the care of Adam Gibbons and Dave Anderson, and slowly being trained by cousin/coach and trainer Emery Lloyd.

Fully recovered and injury free she was ready for this years Outback Invitational that took place on March 19.

Jessica PR'ed like never before. She took home gold in the 1600 meters with a career best time of 5:24.27, and gold in the 800 meters with a season best of 2:21.35.

Not only did she take home two gold medals, but she was also awarded the MVP plaque; Jessica Young, Ridgeview, also received the MVP plaque. "I was surprised normally only one runner receives the award,\" said Nichols.

Jessica's goal was to break the record in the 800 meters. By 1:21 hundreths of a second the record still stands at 2:20.54. Next year she said, "It will surely be mine."

Nichols said she would like to thank her therapists Adam Gibbons and Dave Anderson and her trainer Emery Lloyd for helping her recover and get back on the track.

As for the rest of the season, "My next goal is to break the state record in the 800-meters." The state meet is scheduled for May 7, at Spring Valley.

You can catch Nichols in action this Saturday at Spring Valley in the Coaches Classic.
