CHARLESTON, S.C. - Junior distance runner Christian Bailey (Charlotte, N.C.) and senior volleyball outside hitter Whitney Russell (Decatur, Ga.) were the male and female standouts selected as College of Charleston Student-Athletes of the Week sponsored by Piggly Wiggly for the week of Sept. 6.

Bailey paced the CofC men's cross country team with a 10th-place finish at the Eye Opener meet hosted by USC Upstate on Sept. 4 in Spartanburg, S.C. He clocked in a career-best time of 26 minutes, seven seconds in the 8K race. The Cougar men went on to finish sixth overall among the 21-team field.

Russell had a career-high 32 kills in the CofC volleyball team's 3-2 victory over in-state rival South Carolina at the Carolina Challenge hosted by Winthrop on Sept. 4 in Rock Hill, S.C. It marked the second-most kills in a single match in school history and the most since former player Suzanne Lowry's 45 during the 1992 season. In two of her three matches over the weekend, Russell recorded double-doubles (32 kills and 11 digs vs. South Carolina and 17 kills and 12 digs vs. Clemson). She led the Cougars in kills in each of their three games and was named to the all-tournament team.
