Journal: On the Run

I'm a former senior runner from Pickens High School in South Carolina. I'm sure you have never heard of the school and probably don't even know where the city is located but that's okay. I wasn't a standout runner but I did pretty well. I lettered my first year and had plenty of improvements over my senior year. My only regret was that I didn't start running when I was a freshman. I had waited until my senior year to run and missed on one of the best sports I have ever known, a sport that truly pits an athlete against another.

Below is my story.
Entry: 2

Oct. 2, 2005

Sorry guys about the late entry, I've been really busy. This week has been tough on my personal training time. I think my sleep deprivation finally caught up with me. 12-hour days leave you real exhausted. The battle was fierce but I eventually gave in for one day this week and did nothing but sleep.

I got the best nine hours of sleep I have had in a long time. The training I did this week was a little varied and different. In the beginning of the week I ran outside when I first got off work. It's one of the hottest parts of the day and my hard breathing and sore lungs can attest to this. Who ever knew breathing in hot dust would be hard? I ran around the hill and then did a couple of sprints up and down it. By the end of the run my mouth was as dry as the asphalt I was running on.

Then later in the week I decided to vary up my cardio a little bit. I went with some co-workers and played basketball. We ended up playing three games. I don't think my legs and feet have been that sore in a long time.

By the next day I had a couple of blisters on my feet from playing ball in running shoes. I finished off the week by switching up my cardio program yet again. Some of my buddies and I tossed the football around and ran some basic run and catch plays. Then we decided we would run some sprints up and down the basketball court. We sprinted to the half court mark and back to the baseline then to the other side of the court and back. We continued this for about six times. You wouldn't think that would kill you but being outside in the heat and on a court really add fatigue to the exercise.

We then proceeded to the gym and did some duration exercises. I found out quickly that holding yourself up in the front lean and rest for five minutes is really hard. It's pretty much just holding up all your upper bodyweight with your hands. After the endurance exercises that included legs we did a quick burnout and were done for the day.

I could not exercise at the end of the week due to the fact that I have chow hall guard. This is yet another exercise in duration and in patience. Protecting my fellow soldiers and Americans comes first though. Well, back to the grindstone. Just figured I would write a little bit and let people know how I was doing. Remember if you have any questions about me or the service, or any comments to make please feel free to let me know and e-mail me. Thank you for your time.
