BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Sophomore Dena O'Brien and senior Emily Smith each won individual events as the College of Charleston women's track & field team opened competition in the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships Thursday.
The Cougars finished the day in fifth-place with 27 team points.
Smith got 10 points for the team as she put together a championship performance in the high jump. Smith, who won the event with a clearance of 1.70 meters (5-7), cleared 1.60 meters and 1.65 meters on her first try and 1.70 meters on her second attempt. Smith's performance is the seventh best in school history.
O'Brien continued her SoCon success as she won her third title with a six second victory in the 3,000-meter run. O'Brien, who crossed the finish line in 9:38.11 set a new CofC school record and was just four seconds off the SoCon record in the event.
Freshman Tiffany Sisk, competing in her first SoCon Championship earned points for the team as she finished in fifth-place in the shot put with a heave of 12.73 meters (41-09.25).
Senior Alyssa D'Orazio advanced to the finals of the 800-meter run as she won her heat with a school record setting time of 2:14.29.
The Cougars distance medley relay team made up of Callen Powers, Laura Call, Dana Walsh and Kristen Wolfe finished in sixth-place with a time of 12:26.95, the fifth best time in school history.
Kaitlin McWhorter finished 10th in the pentathlon with 2,462 points as she competed in the 60-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800-meter run.
