SCISA series: SCA Coach Steve Conway Talks About Fitter

scrunners: When did Hannah-Lee start to run for you?
conway: Hannah-Lee started running for me in the 2005 track season, just one year ago. We got off to a late start in track so she didn't have a lot of time to do conditioning work. Even so, she improved her time in the mile from 7:14 to 6:33. The bad news was that she just missed qualifying for our State Meet by three seconds. However, she used this disappointment to inspire her in cross-country and she became one of our top runners. She finished in the top 100 at Coaches Classic, she finished fifth in the SCISA 1a/2a State meet, and she became a SC elite runner. She did all this as a seventh grader.

scrunners: What kind of motivation does she bring to the track for practice and meets on a daily basis?
conway: Hannah-Lee's motivation comes from her thoughtful and humble heart. She has a love for her team, her school and her Lord that is completely pure and genuine. Her personality is a perfect match for cross-country because she is not afraid to hurt and she is a great teammate that is full of encouragement.

scrunners: What were your first thoughts when you found out about Hannah-Lee\'s admiration towards Stephanie?
conway: I thought it was wonderful. I have known Stephanie for years because my oldest daughter was Stephanie's teammate and her "guardian angel" when Steph was new. Hannah-Lee, or any runner, can only get better by emulating Stephanie, because no one works harder or runs more aggressively than Stephanie.

scrunners: When you see Hannah-Lee around Stephanie Buffo, what kind of impact does Stephanie have on her and your team?
conway: The thing about Stephanie is that she is a great role model. It seems these days there are two schools of thought in regards to winning. One group of people regards winning as the only goal of sports, their motto is "win at all costs." I would put Barry Bonds, Tim Montgomery, and Bobby Bowden in this group. Another group seeks to do things the right way and believes winning is a by-product of being fair, honest, honorable, and hard working. It is more a result than a goal. I would put John Wooden, Joe Paterno, and (on a local level) Jim Kilbreth, Bobby Urban, and Bill Owens in this group. The Buffo family are certainly in the second group. By Stephanie's example and her encouragement my girls have a road map to get where they want to go, and hopefully they are moving in that direction.

scrunners: What is your team looking to achieve this year?
conway: My goal in track season is to get as many kids as possible qualified for the SCISA state meet, and then I would love to place three kids in the two mile and two kids in the one mile at State. I would also love to score at the Spartanburg County Meet for the first time ever. This would establish some momentum for next cross-country season.
