2018's Eight Biggest Breakout Athletes So Far

3. Jake Freidel - Father Tolton

The brother of three-time state champion pole vaulter Bayli Freidel, Jake, a sophomore, is quickly making a name for himself with Father Tolton.

After a dreaded 5th place finish at last year's sectional meet, it appears that Freidel has come back with a vengeance as the Tolton sophomore has already cleared 14-6 and 14-7 this season after finishing out his freshman campaign with a 13-6 vault.

He did go 13-11.25 this indoor season so his 14 feet clearances are not totally shocking; not to mention his last name is pretty synonymous with elite pole vaulting in the state of Missouri already. Nevertheless, Freidel is currently number five in Missouri, number one in Class 3, and an inch ahead of the next best sophomore in the state. Furthermore, believe it or not, he is tied for eighth among all sophomores in the country.

We have already seen a video of him clearing a 15-6 bungee in practice, so who knows what may be on the horizon.

4. Hadley Jetmore - Pembroke Hill

As we have already shown, freshmen can indeed be considered breakouts, too.

Especially considering there was no inkling that this one would already be over 11-6 in the pole vault.

Pembroke Hill's Hadley Jetmore was a strong Class 3 talent in the fall, turning in a 19:59.60 personal best in the 5K and finished 43rd at the state meet. Little did we know, though, that Jetmore's best events would be the 400 and the pole vault.

After clearing 10-11.75 in January, Jetmore has already climbed to 11-6, putting her as a potential state champion in the event already. Not to be outdone, though, she has also performed admirably around the oval with a 59.31 400 best and a 2:32.67 800.

She is now tied for first in Class 3 in the pole vault with another another breakout candidate - Centralia's Lynsie Curtis - and is also the only girl in Class 3 currently under 60 seconds in the 400. Her 800 time is 9th in Class 3 at the moment, 10 seconds behind Emily Yaeger
