As we approach the South Carolina Track & Field State Championship, I wanted to give some insight into what has been done to assure that the athletes are treated fairly and that the meet runs as smoothly as possible.  I first want to congratulate each and every athlete for advancing to their classification championship and wish everyone good luck in the competition.

For the first time in program history, the Clemson women's track & field team is rated No. 1 in the nation according to data released Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Tigers jumped two spots from last week's rankings after winning their sixth consecutive ACC championship. (via )

COLUMBIA -- If results are an accurate measure of performance, then Shekara Martin’s “work in progress” is close to completion -- at least for this track season.  

Mauldin alumna and Clemson Tiger, Alyssa Kulik, qualified for the 2012 Olympic Trials in 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:52.90. This is a new ACC record.

COLUMBIA -- Kiah Seymour’s record-setting performance in the girls 400 meter hurdles was certainly the highlight on the girls’ side, but there were plenty of other impressive female performances at this year’s Taco Bell Track and Field Classic.    

COLUMBIA -- Tevin Hester shook off what he described as a minor hamstring injury on Saturday to take the boys 100 meter dash competition at the 20th Annual Taco Bell Track and Field Classic.

COLUMBIA -- The Lexington Wildcats’ boys 4x800 relay quartet has been on an impressive streak over the past month or so and it appears there’s more ahead based on the team’s performance Friday night at Spring Valley High.

Wren alumnus Brad Orr finished 105th overall today in the Boston Marathon.

COLUMBIA -- Kiah Seymour, a senior from Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, D.C., set a new U.S. no. 1 mark in the high school girl’s 400-meter hurdles Saturday, crossing the finish line in 1:01.95 and beating the previous mark of Jennifer Cannon of Tennessee High School of 1:02.60, which she ran last weekend at the Beach Run Invitational in Myrtle Beach.

COLUMBIA -- Lexington High’s boys relay team continued its impressive late-season run Friday, narrowly capturing first place in the 4x800-meter finals at the opening night of the 20th Annual Taco Bell Track and Field Classic held at Spring Valley High, and setting a meet record in the process.  

Year 20!!  Quite a milestone.  It all started with the first “rubber” track at Spring Valley and a commitment by Coach Jones to make it a little bit better each year.  No doubt he does make it better each year.  What a palace Harry Parone stadium has become.  Combine Coach Jones’ desire to put on a meet that athletes will remember at a high school facility that is second to none and you end up with some pretty rich tradition.

Spartanburg boys won the 4x800-meter relay at the Westlake Relays in Atlanta, Ga. The Vikings ran a top two time in the nation this season (7:52).

RALEIGH -- Daniel's Andre Ivankovic finished ninth overall at tonight's Raleigh Relays 3,200-meter run in 9 minutes, 24.92 seconds, a personal record. Brent Demarest (Porter-Gaud) was 16th in 9 minutes, 32.93 seconds, also a personal record.

COLUMBIA -- This Saturday's SCTCCCA Coaches Classic meet was cancelled during the evening due to severe weather in the area.  

LEXINGTON -- Lexington Wildcats Track Coach Matt Oberly has been trying different combinations this season in hopes of finding ones that will give his team the best chance to compete in the various relay distances.  He may have found them at last week's Mellow Mushroom Relays in Wando.

LEXINGTON -- Colby Coulter has said he wasn't planning to drift to far from home once he made his decision on a college, and this week he kept to those plans by signing a letter of intent to compete in track and cross country at Winthrop University.

The outdoor invitational season starts with three instate meets on the schedule.

Since my running days at Furman, I have been fascinated by running on the oval of an indoor track.  The short fast races, the quick tight turns, the sound of the starter’s pistol echoing off the walls and ceiling, and the opportunity to compete during the winter months was an exciting time in my life.  When I started coaching, I wanted my athletes to have the same experiences, so I would take many of them off to Knoxville or Clemson or Johnson City or anywhere close where other high school athletes would compete against us.  The idea of new, indoor school records, traveling to new cities in a different venue, and much better performances in May brought many athletes out for track and field that may never have come out before.  But rules in South Carolina were either changed or more strictly enforced and the opportunities to do these meets started slipping away. 

Lexington boys won the 4x1,600- and 4x800-meter relays at the ncrunners.com last chance meet in Winston Salem, N.C. this past weekend. The Wildcats four mile relay winning time of 18, minutes 38 seconds is ranked third in the nation.

Gene Anderson Invite- Complete Results Sophomore Sandi Morris set a new school record in the women's pole vault to lead the Carolina track and field teams at the Gene Anderson Invitational Saturday.
